Can you imagine a tour operator that halts operations during peak tourist season? That’s exactly what Expeditions India does. It stops operations during peak rafting season in Rishikesh to minimise the ecological footprint of the over-crowded tourist season. Suffice it to say that responsible tourism is at the core of the Uttarakhand-based river rafting and kayaking outfit.
Its founder and director Anvesh Singh Thapa has been rafting and kayaking across the globe since 1996 and was part of the operations at a large adventure company for over a decade and in that time experienced first hand the increasing commercialisation of the river rafting industry in India, often at the expense of the environment. So when Anvesh set up his own river rafting outfilt, he and his co-founder Ing-Marie Putka decided to focus on quality over quantity and offer small-scale, low-impact river adventures that are personal and hands on.
Like most river rafting outfits in India, Expeditions India too offers multi-day rafting and kayaking trips along popular river routes like the Tons, Kali, Ganga, Alaknanda, Zansar and Brahmaputra. What sets Expeditions India apart is its focus on small groups and ‘expedition style’ travel that involves setting up and breaking down camps every day.
Price: Depends on trip. For instance, the two-day Weekend on the Ganga trip costs Rs 14,000 per person and includes accommodation in tents on twin-sharing basis, GST, transfers, activities in the itinerary (includes rafting), camp meals, staff and group guide.

Expeditions India specialises in low-impact river rafting and kayaking expeditions. It closes its operations during peak rafting season in Rishikesh to minimise the ecological footprint of the over-crowded tourist season. Groups are restricted to a maximum of 16 to, again, minimise ecological footprint and they follow ‘Leave No Trace’ principles. Expedition India works with schools to educate children about river conservation through experiential classes and hands-on learning. They support local economies by hiring local guides and purchasing local produce as much as possible. To encourage women paddlers, they offer discounts to women during particular times of the year.
