A luxury safari lodge near Pench National Park, Madhya Pradesh
Pench is true Kipling Country, with the forests here having inspired the evergreen Jungle Book. You can feel closer to both Mowgli and the natural world in one of the six stunning treehouses that are part of the accommodation on offer at Pugdundee Safaris’ Pench Tree Lodge. Perched 18 feet above the ground, the treehouses are not the ones that children used to make to while away long summer days. These are luxurious affairs, built atop Mahua trees and supported by stilts, with large French windows, private sit out deck, four-poster beds and round-the-clock hot and cold water.
If you want to be closer to the Earth, there are six spacious and well-appointed modern cottages on offer. These cottages too have large French windows allowing for uninterrupted views of the jungles beyond.
At the resort, guests have access to 16 hectares of private forest, to explore and observe the wildlife at close quarters. There are also bush dinners and breakfasts to be enjoyed, birding and other expeditions to take part in and village bazaars to explore. Pench is prime tiger country and the national park is also home to a large number of other animals and birds and safaris here, accompanied by the Lodge’s naturalists, will be rewarding.
But you do not have to really move from the private deck of your very own treehouse to spot wildlife. The Lodge claims its guests have so far seen wild boars, civets, jungle cats, jackals and spotted deer as they sat sipping their morning tea or the evening sundowner on the private deck.
Price: Rs 17,000 per night per person (includes all meals and some activities)

All the lodges of Pugdundee Safaris do not use plastic bottles or single-use plastic. The natural landscape is left in its pristine form in all the lodges, ensuring the natural habitat is not disturbed and the indigenous flora and fauna can flourish. The lodges also opt for locally grown and sourced food and much of the organic vegetables and herbs are grown on the premises. The menu is crafted around local produce and regional recipes are given prominence. About 80% of the staff at Pugdundee lodges are from the local communities and many hold key managerial positions. Over 70% of the revenue is pumped back into the local economy in the form of salaries, tie-ups with suppliers, vehicle hiring, labor, park fees and taxes.
